What causes someone to put on weight suddenly?

An athlete who keeps to his normal rigorous training schedule and watches what he eats suddenly starts putting on a lot of weight and can't lose it whatever he does. What causes this?
Answers:
One could only put on weight from overeating or eating the wrong kind of food (hidden calories)

Stress can cause this, and so can problems with thyroid function. The athlete should go to his doctor immediately.
bad moods and food i guess
depending on age, sometimes hitting puberty or entering the "next stage" of life will alter matabolism and screw wit the body. also any new medications can affect that too
two possible causes are certain medications and malfunctioning thyroid (underactive)
I agree with hyeballer94 's answer. Quit eating disgusting, unhealthy, so-called "food" from McDonalds, and you will not get fat.
He might have started illicitly taking steroids to boost up his performance.
